Interpretation is the rendering of spoken language from one language to another.
The purpose of the course in interpreting on the Joint Postgraduate Studies Programme (J.P.P.S.) is to train those who wish to become conference interpreters.
Conference interpreting includes:
- simultaneous interpreting, which implies the corresponding equipment (booths, headphones, microphones), when the interpreter translates while the speaker is speaking,
- consecutive interpreting, while the speaker speaks for a few minutes (usually not more than twenty), the interpreter takes notes and translates when the speaker pauses or stops,
- whispered interpreting, where the interpreter sits alongside one or two delegates who do not understand the spoken language and translates whispering and simultaneously with the speaker.
