This course aims to enhance translators’ self-consciousness regarding their special role in society and to raise their awareness with reference to the professional market and professional conditions in real life. The students develop competences that are necessary for the profession of the translator and acquire knowledge related to issues of planning and managing time, stress and workload as well as communication and negotiation with the client, compliance with deadlines, instructions and specifications, implementation of quality standards, ergonomics, management of financial and legal issues (rates/invoicing, tax issues, confidentiality contracts, copy-right issues, responsibilities, language service specifications, tender specifications etc.) and working in a team. Students, also, get exposed to issues of job search and networking, they learn how to write their own CV and how to use social media responsibly for professional purposes. One of the aims of the course is to strengthen the future translator’s ability for self-evaluation and for constant development of competences and skills as well as for adjustment to new working conditions and to new market requirements. What is of utmost importance in this course, is the students’ sensitization regarding professional ethical codes and standards and network with other translators and language providers via social media and professional associations.

Assessment Method

Continuous assessment (10% of the final grade)
Individual or group assignments (30% of the final grade)
Final assignment (60% of the final grade)
