Bridging the gap between generic and microlinguistic levels in ESP reading courses (90 min)
The popularization of genre approaches in the teaching of FL for academic purposes can sometimes lead to an underestimation of the need to develop awareness of microlinguistic aspects of target texts. On the other hand, over emphasis on grammatical structures without making the relationship with contextual levels (genre) explicit may fail to meet the needs of a language course for academic purposes. This issue will be discussed in the context of results obtained in corpus studies carried out by our research group focusing on the role of definitions in university textbooks and causal relations in medical research articles.
- Seminar 2
Τετάρτη 10 Μαΐου 2017, 17:00-21:00, αίθουσα σεμιναρίων 308
An Introduction to Systemic Functional Linguistics (4 hours divided into 2 sessions)
This talk intends to present an overview of Systemic Functional Linguistics, mainly based on the conceptualizations developed by Michael Halliday. This can be organized into two sections of two hours each. The contents to be addressed are the following: Functional perspectives of language. System and Function. System as choice. The three metafunctions: experiential, interpersonal and textual. The metafunctions as correlates of contextual variables (register). The experiential metafunction: resources for representing the world. The interpersonal metafunction: resources for interacting and expressing subjective meanings. The textual metafunctions: resources for organizing discourse. Examples and text analysis.
