Application dates

PhD applications are open twice a year:

1st October – 15th November

1st April – 15th May

1. All students interested in applying to the PhD programme offered by the School of English are advised to reach out and connect with potential faculty supervisors.

Choose and contact a prospective faculty advisor with whom you would be interested in working.

and then contact the faculty member you are interested in working with to inquire whether they are willing to serve as your supervisor.

Admission requirements

Applicants are required to submit the following supporting documents:

1. A draft research proposal (5-7 pages long) in English that should include:

• Project title
• Research supervisor
• Proposed mode of research
• Aims and objectives
• Synopsis
• Background (provide context around your research topic through a literature review that demonstrates your understanding of how significant studies and researchers in your area of research have contributed to dialogue shaping the current landscape)
• Expected research contribution
• Proposed methodology
• Resources
• An indicative bibliography

A critical component of your research proposal is a detailed work plan that will indicate the feasibility of completion within the timeframe.

2. Documentation that demonstrates that your proposal fits the research interests of a specific potential supervisor (faculty member of the School of English)
3. Detailed curriculum vitae
4. Personal statement
5. Copy of undergraduate degree and transcript of records listing all BA courses you have completed, grades obtained, and final average grade
6. Copy of postgraduate degree and transcript of records listing all MA courses you have completed, grades obtained, and final average grade
7. Two letters of recommendation from faculty members
8. Research papers, publications related to the MA field of study (if available)
9. Certificate(s) of professional experience (if available)
10. Certificate of language proficiency in English (level C2) according to CEFR for non-native speakers of English who are graduates of Schools other than the School of English. 11. Formal declaration that the proposal submitted is original and has not been submitted to another institution before, either in Greece or abroad.
12. Formal declaration that applicants are aware of and accept the Rules of Procedure, regarding their rights and their obligations towards the School of English and the possible sanctions that can be imposed in case these are breached.

For candidates that hold a foreign BA and/or MA degree

Bear in mind that your BA/MA degree must be included in the National Registry of Foreign Recognized Higher Education Institutes and the National Registry of Foreign Recognized Academic Title Types in order to be accepted. (HELLENIC NARIC/ΔΟΑΤΑΠ, https://www.doatap.gr/)

For candidates submitting a foreign public document

In order for a foreign public document to be accepted by Greek public services, it must first undergo legal validation (on a case-by-case basis), and then, be officially translated. The procedure is as follows:

Validation

1. Ιf the foreign public document has been issued by an authority of a contracting country to the Hague Convention of 1961, which has been ratified by Greece with Law 1497/1984, in accordance with the existing contractual obligation, it must bear the Apostille except for the exceptions provided by Law 4231/2014 and No. Regulation (EC) No 1191/2016 of the European Parliament and of the Council.List of contracting countries to the Hague Convention of 1961 appears here:https://www.hcch.net/en/instruments/conventions/status-table/?cid=41

2. If the foreign public document has been issued by authorities of countries which, although they have acceded to The Hague Convention, Greece has expressed objections to their accession and for as long as they have not been lifted, i.e. Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Peru and Tunisia, this is validated only by the competent Greek consular authority. The competent Consulates are: i. Kyrgyzstan – Prox. Office of the Embassy Astana Kazakhstan, ii. Mongolia – Prox. Beijing Embassy Office, iii. Uzbekistan –Consulate General in Moscow, iv. Peru – Prox. Embassy Office Lima and v. Tunisia – Prox. Office of the Embassy of Tunis.
3. Ιf the foreign public document originates from authorities of a country that is not a party to the Hague Convention or it is a public document expressly excluded from the text of the Convention as regards the affixing of an Apostille (e.g. documents issued by diplomatic or consular agents, administrative documents directly related to a commercial or customs act), consular validation is required. More specifically:

 3a. Consular validation may be affixed to a foreign public document issued by authorities of a country not party to The Hague Convention by the relevant Greek consular authority in the country of origin, provided that it has already been validated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the document. Alternatively, the foreign public document may be authenticated by the CFSP Ratification Department of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Τμήμα Επικυρώσεων του ΚΕΠΠΑ του ΥΠ.ΕΞ.). This is only possible if the document is first validated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country concerned and then validated by the Consular Authority of that country in Greece. Exception: For documents originating from Ethiopia, Algeria, Afghanistan, Ghana, Eritrea, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Kenya, DR Congo, Libya, Mali, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan, Sri Lanka and the Philippines the validation is done only through the competent Greek consular authority.

 3b. Documents issued by a Diplomatic Mission or consular post accredited to Greece, in the exercise of its consular duties, must be validated by the CFSPE Ratification Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Τμήμα Επικυρώσεων του ΚΕΠΠΑ του ΥΠ.ΕΞ.) or, due to territorial competence, by the respective Validation Office at the International Relations Service (Y.D.I.S.) of Thessaloniki (Headquarters). This does not apply to cases where the document is exempt from the obligation of ratification due to a bilateral or multilateral contractual obligation of Greece (e.g. London Convention of 1968 ratified by Law 844/1978).

1. Translation

After validation, the document(s) must be officially translated in Greek. Official translation may be carried out by any of the following:

• The Embassy or
• The Consulate of the foreign country in Greece
• A lawyer
• A certified translator, who can be contacted via: https://metafraseis.services.gov.gr/
